Omicron variant – the main cause of more and more people being re-infected with COVID-19

According to medical experts in the UK, in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was very rare to hear of someone getting sick a second time. Statistics show that, before November 2021, the UK recorded less than 1% of cases re-infection with COVID-19.

According to the British Health Security Agency, a person is determined to be reinfected with COVID-19 when two positive tests are 90 days apart. The UK has identified more than 800,000 cases of COVID-19 reinfection, according to data updated in March.

Scientists at Imperial College London said, Omicron variant is the main cause of more and more people getting COVID-19 again. The Omicron variant increases the risk of reinfection four to six times that of the Delta strain. Omicrons are believed to have the ability to evade the body’s defenses, which were formed from a previous infection. Fortunately, most people who get a second COVID-19 rarely develop a severe illness. UK data also show that most of the reinfections are young, unvaccinated people.

The vast majority of reinfections are now second-time COVID-19 cases, with also reports of people being infected with COVID-19 up to three or even four times, some within weeks of each other. The UK Health Security Agency warned, the longer COVID-19 persists, the more likely it is that we will be re-infected.
