Plum plums from the North to the South are nearly 200,000 VND per kg

Ho Chi Minh CityCurrently, each kilogram of plums costs 150,000 VND, some places even sell 190,000 VND, while this time last year it was only about 60,000-80,000 VND.

After Son La plums began to enter the main season, goods rushed to the South. Although the quantity sold is high, the price of this product is still quite high. At traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City, each kilogram of plums is being sold for 120,000-150,000 VND per kilogram.

Ms. Hoa, a small trader at Xom Moi market (Go Vap), said that compared to the same period last year, the price of plums is now 40,000 VND/kg higher, but still attracts customers. Every day she sells 10-20 kg.

Meanwhile, Ms. Loan, a small trader in Ba Chieu market, said that every day she wholesales about 1 quintal of plums for 110,000 VND per kg. “Plum plums are very popular at the beginning of the season, so customers still buy them at high prices,” Loan said.

According to Ms. Loan, plums have had a “fever price” from February to now. It is expected that in the middle of the season, plum prices will cool down but will not be as low as every year.

Similarly, at trolleys on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, the price of plums rises to 130,000 VND per kilogram. Mr. Hoang, the owner of a trolley on Le Van Tho Street (Go Vap), said that after the main season plums are in season, the price of plums is quite expensive at the beginning of the season, especially when the quantity is limited.

Even on online markets, plums are for sale at even higher prices, ranging from 170,000-190,000 VND per kilogram (not including shipping fees).

The price of plums at the garden house this year is also quite high. A survey at Son La gardeners shows that plums have begun to be harvested and the price of grade 1 is at 55,000-70,000 VND per kg, plum grade 2 and 3 are also up to 40,000 VND.

Mr. Thanh, the owner of a plum garden in Son La, said that this year’s plums have not yet ripened massively, so the price is still higher than every year. “This year, the area of plums has increased, so in half a month when the harvest is in full bloom, the price will cool down compared to the present. At that time, the plums are ripe, no longer acrid and there is a shortage of goods like now,” said Mr. Thanh.

According to traders, the price of plums is still hot in the season due to the strong increase in purchasing power compared to every year. On the other hand, instead of only distributing to big markets such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, this year this item is also sold in remote provinces and the Mekong Delta, so supply cannot meet demand. In addition, the current high transportation costs make it difficult for plum prices to drop as low as every year.

A report by the Son La Department of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that plum output this year is expected to reach 88,000 tons, an increase of 10,000 tons compared to last year.

The plum is a famous fruit of the Northwest mountains and forests, grown in a number of provinces such as Ha Giang, Moc Chau, Sapa and most famously Son La. The post-main season plum season lasts from April to July. Therefore, after this point, the plums sold on the market are mostly Chinese plums.
