Russia, Ukraine continue negotiations

The two delegations of Russia and Ukraine continued to negotiate in an online form today, after the discussion was rated as “positive” on March 29.

“We continue to negotiate online. Russia’s position on Crimea and Donbass remains unchanged,” said the chief negotiator. Russia Vladimir Medinsky posted on Telegram today.

The office of the President of Ukraine also confirmed the information, citing negotiator Mykhailo Podolyak, but did not provide further details on what will be exchanged by the two delegations.

The Russian and Ukrainian delegations held face-to-face talks in Istanbul, Turkey on March 29. Podolyak later said he felt “positive” about the negotiations with Russia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also said today that Moscow is preparing an answer to the proposals put forward by Ukraine during last week’s talks.

The talks in Istanbul have raised hopes for an end to more than a month of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, although the fighting on the ground shows no sign of abating.

Today’s online talks come after Russia announced that a fuel depot in the western part of the country was attacked by Ukrainian forces. Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of Belgorod province in western Russia, said Ukrainian helicopters hit a fuel depot in the city of Belgorod, causing a large fire.

This is the first time Russia has announced a Ukrainian air strike against a target on its territory, after President Vladimir Putin launched a special military operation. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the strike could hinder future peace talks.

Russia launched a special military operation on February 24 to “demilitarize and de-fascist Ukraine”. Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul on March 29 are considered an important step for the two sides to reach an agreement after more than a month of hostilities.

However, in a phone call with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on March 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the current conditions are not yet ripe for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
