Singapore launches new Sentosa heritage trail

With Mr. Winston Wong, 74 years old, Singapore is an island that holds many memories. Mr. Wong first set foot on Pulau Blakang Mati – today’s Sentosa island – in 1968 as a young officer. It was here that he trained, lived and experienced recreational activities such as sailing and horseback riding.

Tucked away on the island is a playground cum former army barracks. This used to be Mr. Wong’s office and is now where he became a freelance guide at The Barracks Hotel Sentosa. This hotel is now one of the heritage sites on a new trail with sights both familiar and new.

From the iconic old Sentosa monorail to the little-known Siloso Pier, Singapore’s newest heritage trail bears witness to the island’s transformation from a military complex to an entertainment destination .

As the first of Singapore’s 22 heritage trails outside of the main island, Sentosa heritage trail was launched by the National Heritage Board of Singapore (NHB) on March 17.

Developed by NHB and its partner Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), the Sentosa Heritage Trail features 30 sites, including the recently announced Fort Siloso national monument.

NHB and SDC say, in addition to bringing transformation to the island, the trail aims to showcase the stories of the communities that once lived here and highlight the rebuilding story of a modern Sentosa .

Alvin Tan – NHB Executive Vice President for Policy and Communities – shared: “Through this pathway, we hope to take Singaporeans and tourists on a journey through time across the island to discover heritages and stories that are both familiar and new. I hope visitors will learn more about the island, its military and recreational heritage, and realize that Sentosa always has something new and exciting to explore.”.

The first route of this heritage trail is called “Kampongs and Barracks”, a 3km route that allows the public to explore the life, livelihood and living space of the people of Pulau Blakang Mati.

Notable sites along this trail include a former military hospital and the Sentosa Gateway boardwalk. The 4km Forts Route offers visitors the opportunity to explore the extensive fortifications on Sentosa, which were militarized in the late 1800s. Highlights of the route include Fort Siloso and Fort Serapong.

The final route “Memories of Sentosa” is 2.5 km long and includes some of the island’s inherent attractions with respective memories in each location. Sites along the route also include the old Musical Fountain and the old Ferry Terminal.
