Spain – New energy center amid European crisis

Among these plans, Spain is emerging as a potential hub thanks to the availability of infrastructure facilities. gas as energy regenerative.

These days, the work of the staff at the liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing plant in Barcelona, Spain is very busy. Together with five other plants around the country, Spain in total processes almost 40% of the LNG entering Europe, converting them back into gas that supplies homes and businesses.

“We have the earliest LNG infrastructure in Europe. This gives us more flexibility in terms of energy supply, compared to countries that rely heavily on imported pipelines,” said Claudio. Rodriguez – Director in charge of infrastructure, Enagas Energy Group said.

Besides importing LNG, Spain also has an advantage in energy supply, as the country has been promoting many other clean energy sources such as hydroelectricity, wind power and solar cells.

During his recent visit, US President Joe Biden pledged to increase LNG exports to Europe to 15 billion m3 this year. This is creating a huge opportunity for Spanish LNG processing units. There have been discussions about increasing gas connections from one country to another, but according to experts, this will be a long-term problem.

Marie Vandendriessche – Research expert, ESADE School of Economics said: “The EU now has a plan to reduce its dependence on gas from Russia by two-thirds this year. However, this is not a process. The process is easy, most importantly, Europe will have to find and sign new suppliers.”

Spain currently has only one small gas pipeline connecting to France, with a transmission capacity equivalent to about a quarter of the monthly LNG imported into the country.

EU and Spanish officials are also negotiating a priority mechanism so that the country can both ensure energy security during a period of high prices, and can share gas supplies from LNG with neighboring countries. , serving the block’s energy security goals.
