The last Chinese Emperor’s royal wedding old set of photos

Pu Yi (1906 – 1967) was the 12th and last emperor of both the Qing dynasty and Chinese feudal history.

Although he abdicated in 1912, he remained in the palace and kept the title of Emperor. In 1922, Pu Nghi got married at the age of 17. The person chosen to be his eldest wife was Uyen Dung of Quach Bo La Thi. On December 1 of that year, the wedding ceremony of Pho Nghi and Uyen Dung was held at the Forbidden City according to the most grandiose standards for the head of the country. This was also the last royal wedding of the Qing Dynasty. This wedding ceremony also ordained another concubine position, Thuc concubine Van Tu.

The rituals performed in the great marriage are of course also numerous. Before getting on the palanquin to go to the Forbidden City, the female officials burned incense to smell the inside and outside, and even the bride’s head scarf. When the Queen got off the palanquin, the Emperor raised his bow and shot 3 horizontal arrows above his head with the meaning of warding off evil spirits and praying for peace. At the moment Uyen Dung arrived in front of her husband, the Empress had to step over a pot of red coal, conveying her wish that the married life would burn like fire in the future.

A special thing, although the wedding was held according to traditional standards, extremely according to feudal rules, posterity also realized many “strange” details in the wedding room of Pho Nghi – Uyen Dung. These are Western-style objects, such as the bathtub behind the flower curtain or the toy dolls. At that time, Western culture had a great influence in China. However, the fact that such details of Westernization appeared even in the Forbidden City also surprised many people.
