The prospect of de-escalating the Russia-Ukraine conflict

The information was given by President Tayyip Erdogan on March 31.

Erdogan said talks between Moscow and Kiev in Istanbul had given “significant impetus” to progress in ending the conflict. He also reiterated his offer to hold a meeting between Ukrainian President Zelensky and Russian President Putin.

Meanwhile, in a phone call between Russian President Putin and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Putin said that now is not the right time to get a ceasefire in Ukraine.

For its part, Ukraine welcomes the provisions of the proposed peace agreement with Russia that was discussed on March 29 in Istanbul; however, continues to accuse Russia of destroying its defense industry.

In related developments, Britain today continued to expand sanctions against 14 Russian individuals. The European Union has also opened an antitrust investigation into Russian oil and gas group Gazprom.
