The pupa is the pupae of the leaf-eating caterpillar on the black sage (Senna siamea) – a tree commonly grown in the Central Highlands to shelter coffee or pepper from the wind.

The caterpillars will feed on the leaves of the blackberry plant, develop into pupae that cling to the surface of the leaves, and then become adult butterflies. The time when the worms develop the strongest is at the end of March and the beginning of April. This is also the time to enter the rainy season in the Central Highlands.

More specifically, the caterpillars and pupae on the blackberry tree that are caught for food are the larvae of the Lemon Emigrant butterfly (Scientific name is Catopsilia pomona), which is a medium-sized butterfly found in Asia. , Cambodia and parts of Australia.

They have the habit of migrating in large herds. The flocks of butterflies with green or light yellow flying in the sky are also one of the typical features of the Central Highlands summer. The female butterflies will perch on tree branches and lay eggs (white) underneath the leaves.

These eggs will take 3 to 4 days to hatch into larvae (caterpillars). The worms about 0.5 cm long when newly hatched will have a yellow or green color and two characteristic black – white lines running along the sides of the body.

When the caterpillars eat leaves to their maximum size, they will create cocoons to become pupae (pupa) and at this time people will catch the worms to make food. This fatty dish is also known as the “forest shrimp” of the Central Highlands mountains.
