Amazon CEO earned $212 million last year

Andy Jassy received a 6-fold increase in salary and bonus in the first year leading the technology giant to replace Jeff Bezos.

According to documents Amazon filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on April 1, this company’s CEO – Andy Jassy received an income package of $ 212.7 million last year. Nearly all of this is in the form of stock options, which will be valid for 10 years.

Jassy’s earnings in 2021 are six times higher than in 2020, when he led Amazon’s AWS cloud computing business. Jassy became CEO of Amazon last summer, replacing Jeff Bezos. The transition took place at a time when Amazon recorded record sales during the pandemic and generated huge amounts of cash and profits from AWS.

Bezos remains Amazon’s chairman, but stepped down as CEO to focus on aerospace company Blue Origin and other ventures.

Bezos’ earnings are unchanged, still close to $1.7 million. Still, his stake in Amazon is enough to keep him the world’s second-richest person, with $188 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

It’s not unusual for new CEOs to receive large bonus shares, as it ties leadership’s interests to the company’s performance. In 2019, when Sundar Pichai took over as CEO of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, he received a one-time bonus share totaling $240 million, according to SEC documents.
