Con Dao will be a regional tourist area
Con Dao will be an island eco-tourism area and high-quality cultural, historical and spiritual tourism with regional and international characteristics.
On April 1, the Government stated the above goal in the task of adjusting the general construction planning of Con Dao, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province, by 2045. The scope of planning research includes the entire district administrative boundaries. Con Dao, with 16 islands, has a total floating land area of more than 75 square kilometers. The sea surface area of Con Dao National Park is 140 km2 and the sea around the islands.
To become a unique international tourist area, Con Dao will have a system of modern technical facilities; branded tourism products with high competitiveness.
In 2030, the population of Con Dao is expected to be 15,000; 2045 is 25,000. Because the land fund here is limited, the Government requires the construction and development of residential and tourist areas “need to be considered for effective exploitation”.
To achieve the set goals, the units are required to review projects and planning in the area; spatial development orientation, land use planning, technical and social infrastructure.
The traffic network will be invested in construction and upgrading such as airports, roads, waterways, tourist ports, passenger ports, and tourist piers. Construction works will be controlled on high floors so as not to affect airport operations.

Con Dao district is 185 km from Vung Tau, 230 km from Ho Chi Minh City, more than 80 km from the mouth of Hau River (Can Tho). Con Dao has a coastline of 200 km, many beaches such as Dat Doc, Bai Canh, Dam Trau, Hon Cau, Hon Tre…
The largest island in this archipelago is Con Lon or Con Dao, more than 51 square kilometers wide. Before the 20th century, Vietnamese historians often called this place Con Lon or Con Non island, the old name in English and French texts was Poulo Condor. In 1977, the National Assembly decided the official name was Con Dao.
Previously, Con Dao had a system of French and American prisons with many large prisons such as Phu Hai, Phu Son, Phu Tuong, Phu Binh, tiger cages, cow stables and the island lord’s house. Con Dao also has Hang Duong cemetery, where 20,000 prisoners are buried, mainly revolutionary soldiers during the two resistance wars.
In 2012, Con Dao prison was ranked as a special national relic.
