“Echo from 2 Worlds”

According to PHYS, right after Perseverance of NASA landed on Mars in February last year, its two microphones began recording and allowed scientists to hear the world for the first time in red planet.

In the study, just published Friday in the journal Nature, scientists produced the first analysis of five hours of sound captured from a microphone mounted on a Perseverance, an absolutely shocking result.

Sylvestre Maurice, lead author of the study and co-scientist for the shoebox-sized SuperCam, mounted on a Perseverance microphone pole.

He and his collaborators from all over the world have listened to various tumultuous sounds such as the small helicopter Ingenuity, the “sister” to Perseverance; laser sound when analyzing rocks during the expedition… among many other sounds. However, the two clear sounds just mentioned are like echoes from 2 other worlds, with 2 different speeds!.

They first confirmed that the speed of sound on Mars is slower than on Earth, only 240 meters per second, while on Earth it is 340 meters per second.

This is easy to explain because the speed of sound of a planet depends on its environment: Mars’ atmosphere contains 95% carbon dioxide while on Earth it is only 0.04% and is also 100 times thinner than Earth. times, making the sound 20 decibels weaker.

However it is the sound of helicopter rotors and other low frequency nature sounds. The high-frequency sound from Perseverance’s laser is again at 250 meters per second, up to 10 meters per second faster.

“I panicked a bit. I thought to myself that one of the measurements was wrong because there’s only one speed of sound on Earth,” said Dr. Maurice.

This means that if you listen to an orchestra on stage, the music will be chaotic because high-pitched sounds will reach the ears a little earlier.

According to France’s CNRS Institute, a research unit, just standing 5 meters apart when talking on Mars is enough to get you into trouble because of these two different sounding worlds.

Dr Thiery Fouchet from the Paris Observatory, a member of the research team, said that the institute studying the sound traveling on Mars and listening to noises such as wind-induced dynamics, would allow them to fine-tune the digital models. to predict the climate and weather on the red planet.
