Editor Do Xuan Son tells a story taught by Meritorious Artist Minh Tri when he first started his career

“Uncle Tri, how do you think I read the news today? Please watch and give suggestions to help me!” – I often ask Meritorious Artist Minh Tri like that, when I was just starting to work.

Time is cold and fast, but that was more than 20 years ago. I still remember vividly, 10 times asking like that, 11 times I got the answer from him: “Your voice is very poor when you read it, but your facial expressions are still like a cow wearing a hat.”

Outstanding Artist Minh Tri

Every time I hear you comment like that, I ask myself, why can’t I just read something that I read?! Then there were the days when I could hold the newspaper in my hand, sit in front of the mirror and practice reading, the days when I could go with my uncle to the studio to listen to him narrate movies or read TV reports…

I suddenly understood, listening is simply reading, but how to read and say how to make the listener feel happy is not simple. I also remember every time I asked him how to read, he would always answer: “What you read, you have to think, you have to understand! Sitting in front of the camera or in front of the audience, reading the news or saying anything, in my head, I have to think, I have to picture as I want to tell people: I When I say that, do you understand? Only then will my facial expressions not be blurred and my voice will be convincing!”.

For me, he has not had any professional teaching sessions in the true sense of teachers teaching students. But Uncle was an inspirational person, someone who knew how to awaken the inner energy of a beginner student that was me back then.

PTV Xuan Son nearly 20 years ago and journalist Xuan Son now

Five months have passed, even though the job of a broadcaster still has a rank, grade, and decent salary in the “salary book” of the State, in VTV, it remains only in nostalgia. The Broadcasters Room has one place for each person, who quit their job, retired, and transferred to other departments. Personally, I also changed jobs and stuck with the career of a television reporter for 10 years or more.

The profession of film narration, reading reportage disappears over time. The people who sit in front of the camera in the studio, read the news or host the program are editors or MCs. This is also consistent with the development trend of modern television. But every time I sit in front of the microphone and read something, I still have the same emotions inside.

Rest in peace uncle! Remember and cherish forever the memories of my uncle, teacher, colleague I always respect!

Mr. Nguyen Minh Tri was born in 1945, is one of the first 2 broadcasters to be awarded the title of Meritorious Artist (with announcer Kim Tien). He used to be a teacher, passed the film actor exam before becoming an announcer of Vietnam Television in 1971.

Meritorious Artist Minh Tri retired from 2005. He died on the morning of March 31, 2022 due to old age and weakness, at the age of 77.
