Eriksen made Chelsea fail
BrotherMidfielder Christian Eriksen scored to help Brentford beat Chelsea 4-1 in round 31 of the Premier League on April 2.
The result of the match was decided within the first 15 minutes of the second half. Antonio Rudiger gave Chelsea the lead with a superb long-range shot. But Vitaly Janelt’s double, interspersed by Eriksen’s card, gave Brentford a 3-1 lead. At the end of the game, the away team engulfed Chelsea with a fourth goal from a new substitute two minutes earlier, Yoane Wissa.
Chelsea not only ended a 6-match winning streak, but also received the heaviest defeat this season. Before that, they had not lost a match by more than one goal. The last time they lost by a three-goal margin also took place at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League a year ago, with a score of 2-5 against West Brom on April 3, 2021.
Chelsea had a reason to break the game a year ago, when midfielder Thiago Silva was shown a red card in the 29th minute. This time Thomas Tuchel’s army still had enough people but still received consecutive goals. Chelsea are still third, but the gap between them and the fifth team is shorter than the gap at the top of the table.
Tuchel probably didn’t expect the game to slip out of Chelsea’s hands so quickly. Rudiger scored his fourth of the season in the 48th minute, with a shot on the edge of the post that went into the net from nearly 30 yards. His teammates held their heads in amazement, while the German midfielder ran to hug his fellow countryman.
