Plowing the field, accidentally dug a rare 3,300-year-old gold bracelet

The unnamed farmer living in the village of Çitli in the district of Mecitözü, Çorum province found the bracelet by accident while working on the farm. Suspecting the item might have historical value, he took it to the Çorum Museum.

Here, experts identified this artifact as dating back to the 13th century BC, originating from the Hittite civilization that once reigned in ancient Turkey. They carried out the restoration work and then added the bracelet to the museum’s collection.

The artifact is exquisitely crafted from copper, vulture, silver, and gold and decorated with many Hittite symbols. The gold side of the bracelet depicts the goddess Hurrian Šauška and her servants.

Šauška is the goddess of love and war revered by the Hittites. The Hittites also believed that she had the ability to cast spells to help heal diseases and restore health.

The reason why the bracelet bears the image of the goddess Šauška lying in the fields of the ancient Hittites is because the Hurrians had a profound influence on the Hittite empire, even then assimilated into the Iron Age.

According to Ancient Origins, although it has been deformed and lost some parts, but the bracelet still gives a lot of interesting information about the Hittite civilization. Very few jewels from the Hittite era have survived to this day and the bracelet will reveal the culture’s style of clothing.

“After initial evaluation, we found this to be an unprecedented piece, we have never seen anything like it before,” said Resul Ibiş, an archaeologist at the Çorum museum.

Çorum is the site of the ancient city of Hattusa that the Hittites built. The city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986 due to its intact architecture and archaeological sites. Hattusa served as the capital of the late Bronze Age Hittite empire.
