In December 2021, Children’s Hospital 2 in Ho Chi Minh City received a 14-year-old girl from Tu Du Hospital who was transferred to a critical condition of COVID-19. The patient’s condition deteriorated rapidly, the damage to multiple organs was very severe, so he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for continued respiratory support, continuous dialysis, and treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics, anticoagulants, and anti-inflammatory drugs according to the patient’s guidelines. After 4 days of treatment, lung condition continued to deteriorate, severe damage was diffused on both sides, high parameter mechanical ventilation. The doctor prescribed the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) technique for the girl.

Doctors said that after 80 days of running ECMO, there were times when the child’s condition was so severe that it seemed impossible to survive. But with the best efforts and the dedicated care of the doctors and nurses, especially the ECMO team, the girl’s condition improved.

She gradually recovered, stopped ECMO and then weaned off the ventilator. However, the patient still had severe pneumonia and had to breathe positive pressure continuously through the nose, so he continued to be treated at the Department of Respiratory 1.

After a long time of fighting serious illness, the patient suffered a lot of physical and psychological damage, doctors in many departments, including Respiratory, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Psychology have coordinated to build the optimal rehabilitation therapy for pediatric patients.

The patient reduced dyspnea, was switched to oxygen, was able to eat better and started walking on his own. After a total of 108 days of fighting the disease, the patient was discharged home to reunite with his family.
