A couple have moved out of their rented apartment to live in a mobile car. But now they say they can’t afford to travel everywhere because fuel prices are sky high.
Marie-Laure Parsy Szikola (35 years old) from Edinburgh, Scotland wants to see the world more after the complicated development of the epidemic. Her fiancé Alan (34 years old) has had experience living in a van before. So the couple spent £50,000 (1.5 billion) of their savings to buy a Mercedes minibus in July 2021.

They also moved out of the apartment shortly after. Marie told Jam Press: “My husband and I are both sports enthusiasts, active people, passionate about outdoor activities. Therefore, we always aspire to have a free, comfortable life looking for a place to hike, climb or kayak. For someone with a background in adventure games, living at home for long periods of time is a real challenge and I feel it takes a toll on my health, mind and body.“.
Marie wants to have a more attractive lifestyle than planning from work, commute, flatness in life. Before fuel prices skyrocketed, the couple traveled all over Scotland and often visited the West Coast and islands.
But they say that currently rising costs of living and fuel prices are a contributing factor to the delayed mobility. Marie said:With fuel prices so high today, we have to think very carefully about our adventure life. Obviously, the idea of endlessly traveling the road is very appealing, but the certainty that comes from a steady income is what matters.”.
The inside of the truck has been transformed by the couple into a cozy space.
Despite the failures of the plan, the couple is still trying to save money by living in this mobile car. Specifically, they save around £1,200 (36 million) a month in rent and £180-200 ($5-6 million) in taxes and other apartment service bills.
They spend £15 (450k) a week to buy water, the electricity is generated from the solar panels in the truck so it’s free. Although the bus has been converted into a living space, the couple added a more unique feel by replacing the handles.
The couple is delighted with their new home.
In total, the couple spent £100 (3 million) to make the car feel like home and reused decorations from the previous apartment. Currently, although there are no travel plans, the adventurous couple has no plans to return to the rented accommodation.
Their travel plans have now been put on hold because of rising food and fuel costs.
