Do smartphones really need screen protectors?

When buying an expensive phone, the first thing many people do is apply a screen protector, but is this really necessary?

Screen protection is simply sticking a thin sheet of clear plastic or glass to your smartphone’s screen to prevent it from getting scratched or cracked. However, this is not considered too necessary, especially when the screens of the phone lines are increasingly upgraded.

Most Android phones today use Corning’s Gorilla Glass – the world’s leading tempered glass company. This is a hard glass, with high scratch resistance and flexible impact resistance.

Corning has released new versions of Gorilla Glass over the years, the latest being Gorilla Glass Victus, which ensures the safety of devices even when dropped from a height of 6m, resistant up to 100 kg. Gorilla Victus has upgraded scratch resistance up to 8 Newtons, helping to resist scratches from sharp metal objects such as keys, while other common glass only reaches 4 Newtons.

With the iPhone, Apple does not use Gorilla Glass, instead it uses “Ceramic Shield”. This is a glass made from ceramic crystal, debuted on the iPhone 12, also from the manufacturer Corning.

Ceramic Shield glass is made up of ceramic nanocrystals that are smaller than the wavelength of light, making it look like glass, tough and impressively resistant to drops and scratches. Apple doesn’t share many technical details about the Ceramic Shield, saying only that the glass is four times stronger than previous iPhone 12 models.

In addition, using stickers can change the appearance of your device’s screen, especially if they become discolored over time. Since screen protectors aren’t as tough as Gorilla Glass or Ceramic Shield, they can create quite “unsightly” looking scratches without actually scratching the screen.

Sticking to the protective film sometimes changes the feeling of touching the screen, obviously touching the plastic film will not feel as sensitive as touching the glass screen.

Many people stick to screen protectors due to fingerprint concerns, but modern smartphones have an “oleophobic” coating that helps prevent oil on fingers, reducing fingerprints printed on the screen. Even if fingerprints appear, you can easily remove them with a quick wipe with a soft cloth.

In addition, if the screen protector is not applied carefully, you can create air bubbles and cracks that will have to be replaced with a new one.

So under what circumstances should you use a screen protector? If you go to the beach be careful, sand can rub against the phone’s glass screen and scratch it. Rocks, rare metals, and very hard materials like diamonds can also scratch the Gorilla Glass or Ceramic Shield screen.
