Explore the beautiful ancient sacred skylights of the Mayans

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula has long been known as a place for adventurers. A characteristic feature of this soil is limestone, rock which, when exposed to water for a long time, can be said to dissolve for thousands of years.

Limestone does not allow fresh water to accumulate in the soil, but instead allows water to flow through small holes and form deep pits underground. This process goes on for millions of years.

According to research, more than 2,000 years ago, in southeastern Mexico, northern Guatemala, and Honduras, indigenous people created and developed the Mayan civilization that was brilliant in architecture, mathematics, astronomy, and time. At the place where the remains of the ancient city are kept, archaeologists begin their journey to unravel the mystery at the bottom of the cenote – the sacred well.

The well is located on the edge of a small cornfield, northwest of the main steps of El Castillo, the famous central pyramid at Chichen Itza, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. These and other caves and natural wells (also known as cenotes) were once spiritual sites for the ancient Maya in Yucatan.

Sometimes, for some reason, the limestone layer collapses, revealing a cave with an underground water source, marking the birth of a cenote.

With the help of modern technology, cenotes are believed to be linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs. A number of in-depth studies have confirmed that the high density of cenotes marks a belt of giant asteroid craters, which date back to the Cretaceous period around 66 million years ago.

Several archaeological studies have also found evidence of religious ceremonies taking place around natural wells, including sacrifices. Inside the well, the walls form a gigantic dome, tree roots penetrate the rock to absorb water and the stalactites glow in the sun. When the sun is at its peak, a beam of light will fall directly into the water.

Next to the wall under the well, in a small alcove, human skulls, pottery, dog skulls, deer bones and a double-edged sacrificial knife, neatly arranged on a natural stone shelf that dates back centuries. Archaeologists have discovered a connection between the sun and the Holtun well and their role in discovering the pyramids of El Castillo in nearby Chichén Itza.
