Huge explosion in Russian city near Ukraine border

Reuters reported that two explosions were recorded in the city of Belgorod (Russia) near the border with Ukraine.

The cause of the explosion is unknown. One witness said the blast was so powerful it shook the windows of the house she was staying in in Belgorod.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that two Ukrainian helicopters had hit a fuel depot in Belgorod, a city about 35km from the border with Ukraine. They entered Russia at extremely low altitude early on Friday (April 1).

Footage at the scene of the oil depot fire in Belgorod was recorded by people.

The Kremlin said the incident could undermine efforts to create peace between the two sides. Meanwhile, a top Ukrainian security official denied Kiev was involved in the attack.

A local official from the area around Belgorod confirmed that there had been an explosion in the village of Tomarovka on April 3, but that no one was injured, and there was no material damage.

“There was an explosion, debris fell to the ground,” Oleg Medvedev, head of the Yakovlevsky neighborhood outside Belgorod, wrote on Telegram.

Mr. Medvedev did not mention the cause of the explosion. Reuters said it was not yet able to determine whether the explosion Mr Medvedev mentioned was one of the explosions heard by witnesses to the news agency earlier.
