Lion pounces on Egyptian geese swimming underwater

Conservation officer Jem Harris filmed a herd of young lions practicing hunting along a lagoon in the Dulini private reserve in Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa. Latest Sightings reported on January 31.

Lions do not like to enter the water even though they know how to swim. They are different from tigers, which like to go into the water when they want to cool down Animal Planet. However, when standing in front of a river, the lion will still swim through if necessary. In Harris’s video, they also don’t mind getting their feet dirty to catch their prey.

At first, the lions were curious about the Egyptian geese – strange creatures that float on the water. They were attentively following the movements of the geese. When they realize this could be a snack, they try to pounce. However, the geese quickly dived into the water when they saw the hunters approaching.

The lions were initially apprehensive about the depth of the lagoon. But in the end, a lion decided to plunge into the mud. It easily caught the Egyptian goose, grabbed its prey, and stepped out of the lagoon.

The African lion (Panthera leo) is the only cat in the world that lives in groups. Male lions guard the territory of the herd, while females are the main hunters. Their prey includes antelope, zebra, wildebeest and a number of other mammals.

The Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca) is also native to Africa. They mainly eat grass and seeds, adults have a wingspan of 1.1 – 1.3 m and weigh 1.5 – 2.25 kg. This animal has a coat of many colors such as brown, gray, white, black, orange, blue, pink legs.
