Monk set himself on fire because he confessed his love?

The mystery of the deep cave and the pair of crested snakes on Long An mountain

In the mind of the ancient East Asians, the mountains and thousands of mountains often contain mysteries and mythical folk anecdotes. The place where the Dong Nai river flows through Bien Hoa is also a spiritual area, which the ancients likened to a hidden dragon. The dragon’s head is Long An mountain (also known as Buu Long mountain) and the dragon’s mouth holds a pearl is Binh Dien mountain.

On the east side of Long An mountain is a pagoda named Hang Pagoda, the Sino-Vietnamese name is Long Son Thach Dong. The old people said, in the beginning, Hang Pagoda was a natural rock cave in the middle of the mountain, quite deep inside. In particular, there are many snakes here.

Currently, even though it has been built, Hang Pagoda still retains its wild look. Because it is located in the middle of a rocky mountain, this temple also has many ancient trees with a strange appearance. There are also many stone graves here.

A monk named Thich Thien Tho, who lives in the Son Long Buu Dien retreat near Hang Pagoda, said that every time the temple is repaired, the builders and monks have to carry each bag of sand, stone, and cement from the foot of the mountain. up.

This person also told many more mysterious stories so that the Hang Pagoda was a place of inspiration. “A few years ago, there was a pair of grandpa snake here. I saw it firsthand. This pair of snakes is located halfway up the fork, very big, about the size of a pillow to hold a baby.

This pair of snakes on the head have a red comb like a chicken’s comb, very strange. In particular, this pair of snakes has a short and fat body, not long like a normal snake. There are many other snakes, especially in caves. But from time to time “they” pull out, the people going to Mass are scared. Maybe that’s why later on, the cave door was closed to narrow it down and the snakes would come out“..”.

Anecdote about the gourd-shaped tomb

The strangest thing about this temple, it’s a gourd-shaped tomb. At first glance, this tomb looks like a miniature to decorate the temple scene more vividly. At the top of the vase, there is a fresh green bodhi branch.

Until standing in the front, looking at the gravestone with the name, people knew that it was the burial place of a deceased person.

Mr. Thich Thien Tho said that this gourd-shaped tomb is the remains of a tragic anecdote passed down orally by people living around the area.

In the past, there was a female Buddhist who used to go to Hang Pagoda to do meritorious deeds. This Buddhist, ironically, fell in love with a monk in the temple. Once, because she could not hide her feelings, this Buddhist woman confessed everything to the monk. The woman still holds the monk’s hand

However, from the days of blue hair, the monk he made a vow to turn to the Buddha, not to be entangled in the world. After being confessed to, the monk firmly refused and burned himself to preserve his honor. The female Buddhist then also repented, took refuge in her hair, took the dharma name Dieu Phuoc.

Later, when she passed away, according to her will, her ashes were placed in a gourd-shaped tomb similar to a bottle of orange juice, as if asking for the protection of Mother Quan The Am. It is also a way to send repentance for your mistakes“..”.

Also according to this monk, the ashes of the monk who burned himself were placed in a 3-storey tomb tower in a dune near the foot of the mountain, now in the area of Buu Long tourist area. That skeleton, which has not been taken care of for a long time, has become derelict, leaving only ruins and traces of the past.

Who is the person lying in the grave?

This tragic story is both sad and touching to hear. But many details, logic in it makes people turn the problem over. The difference between the two tombs (if the story of the monk he burned himself to preserve his honor is true), one side is taken care of and swept away, placed in a temple on the mountain; the other side is indifferent, impaired, and placed on a low hillock also causes doubts.

The tragic storyteller above, Mr. Thich Thien Tho had to interrupt many times after experiencing a stroke, having to have his skull removed. He was paralyzed on one side of his body and had difficulty walking. However, this story has also been circulated locally for a long time, being told by many others.

Back to the gourd-shaped tomb. In front of the grave, the stele is clearly engraved with the words: Sister Duong Thi Giau, legal name Dieu Phuoc, 50 years old, passed away on January 1, 1975, the elder brother established the grave. Accordingly, Ms. Duong Thi Giau was born in the year of the Tiger (1926).

Venerable Thich Hue Minh, abbot of Hang Pagoda had a different explanation from folk anecdote. The Venerable said that this gourd tomb in the temple is known as “the tomb of Mrs. Sau”. Mrs. Sau means nun Dieu Phuoc, who had a heart to become a monk at Hang Pagoda from a young age, not a Buddhist monk. The nun fell ill and died at the age of 50. The tomb was built by the late monk Thich Quang Dat (the temple abbot in the years before 1975) built after the nun passed away.

According to the Buddhist concept, the gourd is a nectar pot that Buddha Quan Am holds in her hand to save suffering and save sentient beings. The abbot said that maybe before her death, nun Dieu Phuoc left a wish that she wanted her resting place to be located at a temple for her entire life as a monk, on a piece of land close to the mountainside, overlooking Long Lake. Hidden clouds of water. Therefore, the late monk Quang Dai (who was the elder brother of the nun) followed that last wish.
