Thailand recorded the first case of infection with XE . variant

The discovery of the first case of infection with XE variant in Thailand took place not long after the warning of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Accordingly, the Medical Genomics Center of Ramathibodi Hospital (Bangkok) recorded the XE variant on April 2, after analyzing the genetic sequence of a specimen taken from a Thai patient.

WHO said that the XE variant seems to have a 10% higher infection rate than sub-variant BA.2 of Omicron, although this needs further confirmation. The XE variant is believed to be a hybrid between two sub-variants of Omicron, BA.1 and BA.2, which currently account for a small percentage of cases globally.

The XE variant was first discovered in the UK on January 19. About 600 sequences have been reported and confirmed to date.

Citing information from WHO, the Center for Medical Genomics in Bangkok added that a new variant, Deltacron, a combination of Delta and Omicron variants, does not spread quickly or cause severe symptoms, after having been present. Unconfirmed information about another case.

Scientists have identified 2 variants combining Delta and BA.1 as XD and XF, besides 6 variants combining BA.1 and BA.2 as XE, XG, XH, XJ, XK and XL.

Thailand is currently monitoring the risk of infection of this variant.

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health on April 3 said that the country recorded an additional 26,841 infections and 97 deaths from COVID-19 within 24 hours. To date, Thailand has recorded a total of over 3.7 million COVID-19 infections, 25,415 deaths and more than 3.4 million recovered patients.
