Start

Mr. Cook started working as a cleaner at the age of 18. The first job he was assigned was to clean up burnt or flooded places; Deodorize, clean carpets and upholstery before turning to professional cleaning for medical centers and properties.

In 2022, a customer called Mr. Cook with a strange request. “She said the newspaper delivery man found someone dead on her property and asked if I could come clean it up? I found this request quite new, so I agreed‘ said Mr. Cook.

However, as soon as he entered the apartment that day, the scene of a barbaric crime caught his eye. “The victim’s body rested on a dining chair and had been decomposed for nine weeks. Since the dining room is only about 2.5 square meters, bodily fluids spilled throughout the room, flowing through veins in the concrete floor and then dripping down into the downstairs house through a gap in the ceiling light.“, he said.

Although Mr. Cook stayed up late into the night to clean up the liquid, he still needed the help of two other people and took up to 5 days to complete. “This is one of the weirdest jobs I’ve ever had in my life. There were flies and maggots everywhere in the room. The smell of it is really not sure what words to use to describe it‘, Mr. Cook recalls.

Turning point

The call changed Mr. Cook’s life. After a thorough discussion with his wife, the couple realized the shortage of human resources in this market and decided to set up a separate branch to serve the cleaning needs of the scene. Now, this industry has become their main field.

Cleaning the scene is now our daily duty. Usually, people will find out that someone has died when they have passed away about 72 hours before. However, there are cases where it takes weeks or even months to be discovered. The reason may be that they do not have relatives, their family is abroad or there are not many people to contact them.“, he said.

The National Field Sanitation Center has branches across all states and territories in Australia with a staff of 42. They provide a full range of services from cleaning the deceased’s home, cleaning the house of hoarders to cleaning up prisons, hotel suicides, even cleaning the sewer system.

Worst cases

According to Mr. Cook, 52, the worst case he has ever seen is not a dead body. It used to make him unable to eat or drink after cleaning. “I used to go to an apartment. That place is not only a corpse that has been rotting for a long time, but the victim is also a person who likes to hoard things‘, Mr. Cook recalls.

Mr Cook added: “For example, this person has 8 broken refrigerators full of expired food. The scent there is indescribable. The whole house is like a toxic reservoir, simply because it has been neglected for a long time“.

The room was full of trash.

Mr. Cook’s team is often called in to clean the hotel rooms of people who have attempted suicide. This man shared:We were called to a luxury hotel at 3am due to a suicide attempt. When we got there, the room was filled with crime scene investigators“.

Mr. Cook understands that he and his colleagues face haunting scenes many times more than anyone else in their lives. However, he believes that in the nature of this profession, sympathy, understanding and concern for others, as well as the difficulties of the job, are important.
