At the detention center, Mr. Chinh discovered that besides himself, the police also arrested his younger brother Tran Trung Tham and Mr. Khong Van De (living in the same village) and Mr. Nguyen Dinh Ky. During his detention, Mr. Tran Trung Tham died.
After that, the investigation process determined that only Mr. Nguyen Dinh Ky was guilty of killing Mr. Chu Van Quan. On June 15, 1983, Mr. Ky was sentenced to life imprisonment by the People’s Court of Vinh Phu province.
