5 projects to open the gateway of Ho Chi Minh City to the West

Expanding National Highway 50 and four new projects to build and upgrade arterial roads to the West will be invested in the coming time, helping Ho Chi Minh City open the gateway and increase regional connectivity.

The Mekong Delta consists of 13 provinces and cities, with more than 17 million people, has a lot of potential, but over the years, economic development has not been commensurate due to poor transport infrastructure. Currently, 80% of the region’s goods are transported by road to ports in Ho Chi Minh City for export. However, the whole area has nearly 100 km of highways in operation, while the arterial roads of national highways 1, 50, N2… are all overloaded. Therefore, recently, many traffic projects connecting the western provinces with the Southeast, especially with Ho Chi Minh City, have been accelerated.

Last week, the project widen national highway 50, Binh Chanh district, approved by the Director of the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City, Tran Quang Lam, with a total investment of nearly 1,500 billion VND from the central and local budgets. This is a project cherished by the city for many years, in order to remove congestion and accidents for the arterial route at the western gateway.

National Highway 50 will be widened with a length of 7 km, a width of 34 m, 6 lanes, starting point at the intersection Nguyen Van Linh street, the end point is adjacent to Long An. The work is divided into two parts: the first part is nearly 4.4 km long to build a new road parallel to National Highway 50; The remaining section is more than 2.5 km long, extending the existing route. The project also builds new Ba Lon bridge across Ba Lon canal and Ong Thin bridge across Can Giuoc river, meeting 6 lanes of traffic. The site clearance work is separated into a separate project by Binh Chanh district, which is about to be completed. This is favorable for the expansion of the route to be completed in 2024 as planned.

National Highway 50 is 88 km long, passing through Ho Chi Minh City, Long An and Tien Giang. The section through Ho Chi Minh City is currently only two lanes, while this is the path to the Da Phuoc waste treatment complex, so every day is dense with garbage trucks, containers, trucks… The project will be expanded when it is completed outside. Reducing congestion and accidents will facilitate the trade of goods from Ho Chi Minh City to the West; increase connection for Ben Luc – Long Thanh expressway and ring roads in the city, put into operation in the next few years.

Along with the expansion of Highway 50, Highway 50B connecting Ho Chi Minh City – Long An – Tien Giang, newly approved by the Prime Minister approve. The route has a starting point at Pham Hung Street (HCMC), the end point at Trung Luong T-junction (Tien Giang), a total length of 55 km, a width of 78 m, an estimated total investment of about 18,600 billion VND. Of which, the section through Long An territory is more than 35 km, Tien Giang is more than 14 km, and the section goes through Ho Chi Minh City 5.8 km.

In Long An – where the route passes the most with a total length of more than 35 km, the locality has planned to divide into 4 large segments for investment. Currently, the province is focusing on site clearance, in which the section from Ho Chi Minh City to Vam Co Dong river is expected to be completed in 2022. Long An is also planning to exploit the land fund along the route and prepare to call investors. project implementation. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City and Tien Giang are soon promoting implementation plans.

When completed, National Highway 50B will create an axis connecting traffic with Ring routes 3 and 4 of Ho Chi Minh City, contributing to linking international gateways by sea (Hiep Phuoc port, Thi Vai – Cai Mep deep-water port, and Hai Phong port. Long An) and by air (Long Thanh international airport). The project also creates a land fund for embellishment, accelerates urbanization, attracts investment, and develops residential, commercial, service and industrial zones along the two sides.

A project that is expected to help link Ho Chi Minh City with Long An is Vo Van Kiet street extensiont, Binh Chanh district to Hai Son – Tan Do Industrial Park (Duc Hoa district). The road connecting Vo Van Kiet is expected to be 33 m wide, with 6 lanes, with a total investment of about 3,300 billion VND. When the project is completed, it will help reduce the load on the main axis Tran Van Giau – Provincial road 10 connecting Binh Chanh to Duc Hoa is crowded with vehicles, difficult to expand. At the same time, the extension of the route facilitates the demand for cargo transportation from Long An industrial zones to Ring 3, port clusters, industries… in Ho Chi Minh City.

In the infrastructure investment plan from now to 2025, Ho Chi Minh City prioritizes expansion projects Nguyen Van Bua Street, connecting from Hoc Mon district to Long An at the Lon bridge location, with a total length of 22 km. In which, the section through Ho Chi Minh City with a length of 3.7 km will be extended to 40 m; new construction of parallel road Phan Van Hon, 8.5 km long, 30 m wide, cost 3,800 billion. The section through Long An province will expand provincial road 824 to be more than 2 km long, 30 m wide, with a cost of about 470 billion VND.

Last year, the traffic industry of Ho Chi Minh City and Long An also agreed to implement Northwest road opening project, connecting from National Highway 1 (Binh Tan district) to Ring 4 in Hau Nghia town. The section through Ho Chi Minh City, the project to upgrade Nguyen Thi Tu street, inter-hamlet 6-2-5 with a total length of about 10 km, 40 m wide, costs about 5,200 billion VND. The section through Long An to build a new road is nearly 5 km long, 40 m wide, with an investment of about 1,260 billion VND. The route, when formed, will create an important traffic axis connecting Ho Chi Minh City to the West. The project also helps divide the fire for traffic on existing provincial roads 9, 10…

In addition to the above projects, the traffic development plan in Ho Chi Minh City follows the priority schedule of key and urgent projects. At the western gateway, the Department of Transport proposed that from now to 2025, prioritizing important projects is the parallel road to National Highway 50 (Binh Chanh district), 5.8 km long, 40 m wide, with a budget. 3,200 billion VND; Rach Doi bridge construction project (Nha Be district), total investment capital is about 781 billion VND; upgrading and expanding national highway 22, 5.4 km long, total capital of 935 billion dong…
