The rate of children with refractive errors is increasing, especially after epidemics where children have to study online. In big cities, children have to wear glasses for nearly half.

Nearly half of students have to wear glasses

Seeing her 8-year-old daughter often stand in front of the television, squinting to watch, Ms. Hoang Lien (Viet Tri city, Phu Tho) let her daughter go to a glasses store to have her eyes checked. When measuring eyes, the staff of the glasses store said that her child’s left eye is 2.5 diopters, the right eye is 2 diopters. Lien quickly cut glasses for her children to wear. However, when wearing glasses, the baby complains of headaches, dizziness, discomfort. Feeling strange, Lien sent her son to Hanoi to check.

After re-measurement of glasses and pupil dilation, the doctor said that the baby was close to 1.25 diopters with nearly 3 diopter disturbances. Because the measurement of glasses at the wrong shop sells glasses, the baby wears them to the wrong degree of myopia, causing discomfort to the child.

Not only Ms. Lien, many parents see their children have close vision, squint to guess their child is nearsighted and take them to glasses shops to measure their eyes without going to a specialist to rule out false myopia.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh – Head of Eye Unit, Children’s Hospital 1, Ho Chi Minh City, In Vietnam, the rate of refractive errors is very high, with school refraction also considered a public problem in the whole country.

According to research in many provinces, the percentage of students, especially in urban areas, the number of refractive errors is increasing. In 2006, at the National Ophthalmology Conference, it was found that the rate of children with refractive errors in rural areas was 10 – 12%, urban areas was 17 – 20%. By 2014, at the National Ophthalmology Conference, this rate had increased in rural areas to 15%, in urban areas up to 40-50 %.

Particularly in Ho Chi Minh City, it is reported that the rate of secondary school students with refractive errors is up to 46.11%. In 2019, the report of the Department of Health of Ho Chi Minh City showed that the number of students with refractive errors accounted for more than 40% of the total number of students in the city. You can easily imagine when entering the classroom, up to half of the students have to wear glasses due to refractive errors. Refractive errors include astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness.

Children with myopia are increasing.

Taking medicine, acupressure can treat refractive error?

When children have refractive errors, they must wear glasses. Wearing glasses brings the image to the right spot and helps the child see better. Doctors recommend not to hesitate to put your child on glasses. Children under 1 diopter can only need to wear glasses when studying, children with high myopia accompanied by astigmatism, have glasses corrected but vision is not maximum, they must wear glasses regularly.

Many families find that nearsighted children are afraid to wear glasses for their children to take medicine or go to acupressure, doctor Ngoc Anh said that children with myopia cannot be treated with medication or acupressure. According to Dr. Ngoc Anh, myopia is caused by an imbalance of the anterior and posterior axis of the eyeball. The child’s eyeball axis is too long, the cornea is curved, causing the image to focus in front of the retina, so the child cannot see clearly. Therefore, taking medicine or acupressure cannot treat myopia.

During the epidemic period, children must study online, to help children have healthy eyes, Dr. Ngoc Anh recommends parents to note:

First, Children with refractive errors should wear glasses and glasses that have anti-blue light coating to avoid damage to the eyes.

Second, When children use devices, it is necessary to keep the screen 15 degrees away from the horizontal plane, the distance from the screen to the eyes is from 50 – 70 cm. Children need to learn to keep the 20 – 20 – 20 rule. This rule is that 20 minutes of learning will allow children to take a break from seeing about 20 feet or 6 meters away for 20 seconds.

Currently, on the market, there are many on-site optometry facilities from hospitals to roadside opticians, Dr. Ngoc Anh said that in order to evaluate glasses of good quality or not, glasses must ensure the correct refractive parameters. , measured by a specialist in refractive error, making it comfortable for the child to wear.

When children wear glasses, the child’s vision must be correct, if it is out of focus, it is not good for the child. For hyperactive children, parents should apply an anti-scratch, anti-blue light layer to protect children’s eyes.

If the measurement of glasses is not correct, and the child still complains of symptoms such as eye pain and discomfort, parents need to send the child to an eye specialist to be checked for refractive error.

Children with refractive errors need to be re-examined every 6 months for re-evaluation. Children with comorbidities in the eye, high-altitude refractive error should see a doctor according to the doctor’s appointment for closer monitoring.

When using any medication, especially in children, even as an eye tonic, consult your doctor. Even supplements must also be considered suitable or not, the dose as well as whether the child has allergies, drug interactions with drugs being used or not.
