‘Father’ of Twitter regrets harming the Internet environment

Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, thinks he is also partly responsible for creating a messy Internet platform like today.

“Fantastic days working with Usenet, IRC, web or even email,” Dorsey wrote on Twitter. “But when tech corporations centralize discovery and identity, they screwed up the Internet. I realize I’m to blame and feel somewhat responsible, as well as regretful about it.”

Dorsey’s tweet attracted attention because he was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Internet in recent times, having made billions of dollars with Twitter. He also greatly contributed to forming habits and the way people receive and exchange information today through his social network.

Twitter is not as big as Facebook and TikTok in terms of user size. But according to experts, its impact in the information sector is undeniable. Many people turn to Twitter when they want to keep up with ongoing events, but also have access to a lot of false and malicious information that the platform cannot control.

This is not the first time Dorsey has complained about the state of the Internet. Last December, he expressed doubts about Web3, considering it just money making tricks and is dominated by investment funds, although those organizations always talk about decentralization. “You don’t own Web3, it’s the investment funds and technology businesses that own it. We can’t get out of this loop,” Dorsey said. Web3, or Web 3.0, is considered the third phase of the Internet, when data on the Internet will be decentralized, not influenced by administrators.

In 2019, at the TED conference, Dorsey once pointed out the mistakes of prioritizing some features for Twitter when founding this social network. “If I had to start over, I wouldn’t focus on the number of likes and followers,” he said. “Abandoning them will lead to a healthier Internet ecosystem and communication.”

Dorsey co-founded Twitter in 2006 with Evan Williams and Biz Stone. Twitter started its IPO in November 2013, making him a billionaire. He resigned as CEO of the company in 2007 and returned to this position in 2015 but only received a salary of 1.4 USD in 2018. Mr resignation CEO and president of the company last year, giving way to Parag Agrawal.
