Hungarian Prime Minister wins 4 term
Hungarian Prime Minister Orban won for a fourth term with more than 53% of the vote and his party won two-thirds of the seats in parliament.
“We have won a big victory, as can be seen from the moon. We have defended the sovereignty and freedom of Hungary,” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told a crowd of supporters on April 3. .
He added that he “will remember this victory for the rest of his life as he had to deal with a large number of opponents” at the same time, referring to officials in Brussels, international media and “including the President of Ukraine”.
According to the results of a tally of 94% of the national vote, Prime Minister Orban’s Fidesz party received 53% of support, while the opposition coalition won only 35%. Based on the results, the Hungarian national election office said the Fidesz party would hold 135 seats, accounting for two-thirds of the total number of seats in the Hungarian parliament, while the opposition coalition would hold 56.
Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, 58, one of Europe’s longest-serving leaders, is a strong supporter of anti-immigration policies and has recently expressed opposition to tough sanctions against Russian energy.
Prime Minister Orban often takes a neutral stance on the situation in Ukraine and once refused to allow weapons supplied to Kiev to be transported through Hungarian territory. Orban describes himself as a defender of stability and accuses the opposition of heating up the situation.
Orban has been prime minister of Hungary since 2010 and is a follower of conservative, populist policies. He is considered the most pro-Russian leader among the 27 member states of the European Union (EU). Hungary is the first EU country to buy a Russian-made Covid-19 vaccine, although European regulators have not yet approved this vaccine.
