Japan: Many cases of post-COVID-19 sequelae appear after two weeks of recovery

This is the result of a survey by the Center for Infectious Diseases Prevention of Tokyo, Japan.

The Tokyo Center for Infectious Diseases Prevention analyzed the information of more than 200 patients who came to consult a health agency about Post-COVID-19 symptoms. The results showed that there were 46 cases of disease symptoms after recovery COVID-19 from 2 weeks to a month; 40 cases showed symptoms between 1-3 months and 40 cases over 3 months.

The most common post-COVID-19 symptom was persistent fatigue (93 people), followed by shortness of breath (44 people), headache (38 people), taste problems (37 people) and cough. (33 people). In 65% of cases, two or more symptoms appear.

Post-COVID-19 symptoms also persisted in patients, in which 54 cases of post-COVID-19 symptoms lasted for more than one month and 7 cases of symptoms lasted for more than 6 months.

The director of the Tokyo Center for Infectious Diseases Prevention Mitsuo Kaku said that there are cases where patients have more severe post-COVID-19 symptoms than at the time of COVID-19 infection. Therefore, suspected cases of post-COVID-19 symptoms should limit overexertion and seek medical examination and consultation at medical facilities.

Symptoms can last for weeks or months, with most people experiencing symptoms after COVID-19 experiencing mild or moderate symptoms. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 10-15% of cases with post-COVID symptoms progress to severe illness and about 5% become severe.

A prolonged state of COVID-19 may be present in some people, usually 3 months after the illness is gone and for at least 2 months.
