Losing 300 million because of the trap of invitation to upgrade 5G network

Recently, VTV reporters have continuously received many complaints from people about the situation of pretending to be network operators to call customers to upgrade their phone sim services, then take control of the sim cards to make phone calls. performing acts of appropriating money, or being forged documents to open a bank account to commit fraud.

The Ministry of Public Security said that one of the reasons was that the victims had been exposed, leaked personal information and taken advantage of by bad guys.

Sending a few messages according to the instructed syntax, a woman has lost nearly 300 million dong by believing in the scenario of fraudulent objects in cyberspace.

“There was a caller asking if she would change the 5G sim. Then I saw that the account suddenly lost money”, the victim shared.

According to the police, the group of fraudsters took advantage of the SIM card service upgrade policy of the carriers to ask the victim to send messages according to the syntax specified by the object. From here, the victim’s phone sim will lose control, personal information, social network accounts, bank accounts, e-wallets and OTP codes have been appropriated by the scam group to withdraw money.

In addition to using the victim’s information to withdraw money, the subjects also use this personal information to perform the act of borrowing money through online apps, making fake documents to commit fraud. Recently, in Ha Tinh province, a woman was faked her identity card by the subjects, opened a bank account to serve as a fraudulent purchase and sale of civil electrical equipment. The case is currently being investigated by the police.

According to technology experts, in the above cases, the subjects appropriated users’ personal information by dropping links containing malicious code. From there, the subjects will activate Internet Banking and Smart Banking services to appropriate money.

“This website can attach malicious code, these codes are downloaded and attached to the user’s phone or computer device, thereby taking control of the user and obtaining sensitive information, data. important data of that person”, said Mr. Nguyen Minh Duc, Director of CyRadar Information Security Joint Stock Company.

“Services such as e-wallets, digital banking, online transactions are all based on authentication, a simple way of authentication is via SMS, phone number. This authentication method is not completely secure if We leave our phones unsafe,” said Dr. Vu Quoc Khanh, Vice President of the Vietnam Information Security Association.

Data from the cybersecurity monitoring agency shows that from the beginning of the year until now, cyber fraud cases in Vietnam have continuously increased. Authorities have detected more than 5.4 million malicious domains and phishing websites trying to penetrate the cyberspace to commit fraud, up 20% year-on-year. The group that increased the most were still tricks to pretend to be e-banking, e-wallets, online sales and social networking services…
