New variant detected faster than Omicron!

XE is a recombination of two sub-variants BA.1 and BA.2 of Omicron. This recombinant variant occurs when a person is infected with multiple variants of the virus at the same time, allowing the genetic material of the variants to mix in the patient’s body during replication.

According to WHO, XE is about 10% more infectious in the community than BA.2 – that is, 43% more contagious than the Omicron variant. However, this still needs more time and research to confirm. Currently, the number of XE variants accounts for only a small part of the total number of cases globally.

Last week, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) also submitted a brief report to WHO, including some content related to the XE variant. According to UKHSA, there is evidence that the XE variant is spreading in the community in England, although only 1% of the total samples analyzed.

Previously, concerns about BA.2, the current dominant variant, which could cause new waves of infection, have not shown any signs of becoming a reality even after many countries have lifted restrictive measures. . Therefore, scientists hope that the trend of epidemics caused by XE will also develop similarly.

The XE variant was first discovered in the UK on January 19, 2022 with 637 genetic sequence samples confirmed to be this variant.

According to the latest figures from the UK Office for National Statistics, there were about 4.9 million Covid-19 cases recorded in the country last week, 600,000 higher than the previous week.
