During the military campaign in Ukraine, the Russian military mainly used two types of helicopters Ka-52 and Mi-28NM to attack enemy armored vehicles.

Kamov Ka-52 Alligator helicopter

An upgraded variant of the Ka-50, Kamov’s Ka-52 (“Crocodile”/Аллигатор) helicopter is designed to perform patrol, reconnaissance, anti-tank, fire support or attack missions. air target at low speed. The aircraft is 13.53m long, 4.95m high, with a wingspan of 2 x 7.25m, a propeller length of 7.25m, and a maximum take-off weight of 10,800 kg.

The Ka-52 has a two-seat layout next to each other and can be operated by any of the two pilots in the cockpit. The Ka-52 is also the world’s first attack helicopter equipped with an ejection seat to help the pilot eject in an emergency.

Compared with the Ka-50, the nose of the Ka-52 is wider, due to the reduced level of armor in the cockpit and because the nose is where some electronic equipment and radar are installed. The Ka-52 uses two counter-rotating propellers located on the same shaft; This design makes the helicopter very maneuverable, easy to move in tight spaces or quickly take up a favorable battle position.

Two VK-2500 shaft turbines with a capacity of 1863 kW with a full-time numerical control system (FADEC) enable the helicopter to fly 5,000m high (static ceiling is about 4,000m) and can take off and land in the area. high altitude. The unique coaxial rotor design helps the Ka-52 reach a maximum speed of 310 km/h, fly back 130 km/h, fly horizontally 100 km/h, fly at a ceiling of 5.5 km, and fly over 1,200 km.

Weapon system on Ka-52 helicopter includes a 2A42 30mm cannon with 460 rounds of ammunition and missiles and bombs mounted on 6 weapon racks on 2 wings, with a total weapon load of up to 2,000kg. The Ka-52 can carry 9K121 Vikhir anti-tank missiles and Igla-V air defense missiles.

Vikhir missile developed by Tula Design Bureau, weighs 42kg, armor-piercing warhead with high explosive double dose, has a range of up to 8km, capable of penetrating armor equivalent to 900mm of plain steel.

The Igla-V air defense missile, developed by the Kolomna Design Bureau (KBM), uses a thermal positioning system, weighs 10.7 kg with a warhead weighing 1.27 kg, can hit targets at altitudes from 10 -3,500m and speed from 0 to 1,440 km/h, range from 800 to 5,200m.

Mi-28NM . helicopter

The Mi-28 series of helicopters is a product of the Mil Design Bureau, designed purely for attack purposes, especially anti-tank capabilities, and has no transport function. In 1988, the first Mi-28 was successfully tested, called Mi-28A.

In June 2005, a version of the Mi-28, the Mi-28N, capable of day and night combat, began testing in the Russian Air Force. Mi-28N retains most of the original design of the original Mi-28, the biggest difference is the integration of an electronic warfare system, a new powertrain capable of transmitting a lot of energy. more power for the propeller rotor, and the pilot was equipped with night vision goggles.

The Mi-28NM heavy reconnaissance and attack helicopter (“Night Hunter”/Ночной охотник) is an upgraded version of the Mi-28N attack helicopter, manufactured by the Rostvertol factory, making its first flight. At the end of 2016, put into use 2020.

Mi-28NM is 17.01m long, 4.7m high; installed two TV3-117V MA-SB3 engines (2,466 hp/unit), enabling it to reach a speed of 320 km/h; maximum take-off weight 10,400kg, maximum load weight 2,350kg; 460km combat radius.

Compared with the Mi-28N, the Mi-28NM helicopter is upgraded with an advanced electronic countermeasure system, including a device for intercepting attack missiles using lasers; upgraded reconnaissance radar, target indicator on the top of the main rotor, allowing tracking 4 targets at the same time; modernize avionics including infrared sighting, laser target indication or battlefield communications; new equipment for communication with unmanned aircraft; armor is reinforced..

Mi-28NM is equipped with: 1 23mm GSh-23L cannon (base of 250 rounds); 1 30mm 2A42 automatic cannon (250 rounds); 16 anti-tank missiles 9M120 Ataka-V guided by radio command, with high anti-interference ability on the two side wings, maximum range of 8km with 950mm penetration of steel after breaking explosive reactive armor, can destroy Destroy all types of tanks and armored vehicles on the battlefield. It can carry R-73, Igla-V short-range air-to-air missiles or KMGU-2 anti-tank cluster bombs.

In particular, the Mi-28NM is equipped with 9M123M Khrizantema guided missiles. This is the most powerful domestic anti-tank missile of its kind, with a range of 10km, capable of accelerating to 650 m/s and penetrating armor up to 1,000-1,100mm thick.

In general, according to technical-combat parameters, the Mi-28NM helicopter is rated on par with the American Apache AH-64 helicopter. According to the leader of Russian Helicopter Holding, the Mi-28NM is superior to the AH-64 in terms of electronic systems.
