The ‘boss’ of green cars killed cars with internal combustion engines

ChinaBYD stopped producing cars with internal combustion engines in April, and focused on pure electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrids.

Founded in 2003, by 2021, BYD has become the world’s second largest manufacturer of new energy vehicles (NEVs). Only in the first 9 months of 2021, the company sold 329,408 vehicles. In China, BYD is the largest electric vehicle company, but still produces several models of internal combustion (gasoline) engines.

However, last March was the last month that BYD produced gasoline cars and will focus solely on the NEV line. However, the company has not stopped producing gasoline engines as small displacement engines will continue to be used in plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs).

In March alone, BYD sold 104,878 NEVs, compared with only 24,218 units in March 2021, and is the highest monthly sales. These more than 100,000 NEVs include 53,664 pure electric models, 50,674 PHEV models and 540 commercial NEV models.

The company said it still provides the necessary services and components for the lifecycle of current customers’ gasoline vehicles. BYD originally produced 7 models of gasoline engine cars.
