The man known as the master of fruit making made many people’s eyes widen when he saw the tomato tree he planted. The tree is tiny but produces up to 1,296 fruits in one crop.
The latest record that Douglas Smith has set is 1,296 tomatoes, breaking his own previous record.
The record he set not long ago was a tomato plant with 839 fruits. Besides, Douglas Smith is also the holder of the record for growing the largest tomato in the world weighing 3,106 kg.
“After breaking the world record for the heaviest tomato in 2020, I was looking for a new challenge with growing tomato plants that produce a lot of fruit,” he said.
The man who loves gardening has researched an analytical approach to tomato farming methods to get the best results in the world. To achieve this admirable feat, Douglas Smith researched various scientific papers and even took soil samples for laboratory testing.
The world record tomato plant was grown in a greenhouse in Douglas Smith’s back garden. He spends 4 hours a week tending tomato plants.
Douglas Smith said it took him several hours to harvest all the cherry tomatoes from this giant tree. The tomatoes are as small as a dime, but the total mass of 1,296 weighs several kilograms.
He said: “Every week I spend about 4 hours taking care of them in the greenhouse in the back garden. The cherry tomatoes are very sweet, delicious, clean. I started to grow about 100 plants in pots, then only 50 plants were left in the ground and in the end there were only two. I removed a lot.”
Douglas Smith lives with his wife Piper, 45, and 5-year-old son Stellan. Before that, the 43-year-old man once impressed when he planted a super-large sunflower with a tree size of up to 6 meters, far beyond the roof of the Douglas Smith family home.
However, this achievement was not enough to put him on the list of record holders. The tallest sunflower tree in the world, 9.17 meters tall, was planted by German Hans-Peter Schiffer in 2014.
Douglas Smith shared that he likes to experiment with growing giant vegetables and big trees. Every time he tried it, he carefully recorded it. This year he is planting peas, eggplant and potatoes.
