The Russian Su-35S pilot tells about the confrontation with the Ukrainian air force

Each Russian Su-35S fighter faced about 4 anti-aircraft missiles in the early stages of the campaign, while Ukrainian fighters always avoided combat.

Military TV channel Russia Zvezda today announced the story of Klim, a pilot of a Su-35S fighter who is participating in a military operation in Ukraine.

“In the early days, my squadron was hit by a lot of anti-aircraft missiles. On average, each flight was faced with 4 shells, but this number gradually decreased after that, in some cases the enemy did not. attack us. Every mission is analyzed and adjusted, because no two sorties are alike. The enemy is constantly looking for ways to respond, leaving us to make decisions based on the live situation in the air. “, Klim said.

Klim’s unit is responsible for patrolling the airspace, combined with suppressing enemy air defenses. The video shows images from the camera on the cockpit of the Su-35S, in which the Russian fighter launches the missile towards the target from a distance of tens of kilometers.

“We use high-precision weapons, specializing in tracking the radar beam of the air defense complex. The shell will detect the irradiation signal and calculate the flight range to the target. Even when the enemy turns off the radar, the missile fire can still fly to the coordinates of the station and destroy the target, because the radar crew did not have enough time to recover the battlefield and evacuate,” Klim said.

Klim said he had never fought with a fighter Ukraine, despite having made dozens of sorties. Most of the enemy fighters left the combat area when they were locked by the Su-35S, except for a squadron of Su-27 heavy fighters who tried to intercept the group of Russian aircraft.

“We activated the radar and the irradiation warning system when reaching the maximum range, the Russian fighters at that time reached supersonic speed. The Ukrainian border immediately changed direction, most likely the ground guidance force against the enemy. They informed them that we were within effective range,” Klim recalls.

The Russian pilot said that it was very rare to detect enemy aircraft on the radar display, while the Ukrainian army also dispersed military vehicles on the ground to avoid ambushes.

Su-35S is Russia’s 4++ generation fighter, has high maneuverability and is painted with materials to reduce radar reflectivity. The fighter is equipped with many modern electronic equipment, in which the passive electronically scanned array radar (PESA) N035 Irbis-E allows to capture 30 targets at a distance of 400 km and destroy 8 targets. same time.

The Russian Air Force has been in service with the Su-35S since 2013, operating 103 units and ordering 29 more aircraft. Su-35S is the most modern mainline fighter of the Russian army today, in the context that only three Su-57s have been handed over and have not been on combat duty.

Russian forces are said to be concentrating on strengthening the eastern and southern fronts of Ukraine. On the southern coast of Ukraine, Russia has controlled the large city of Kherson and several smaller targets such as Melitopol. Two southern Ukrainian port cities, Odessa and Mykolaiv, announced on April 3 that they had been attacked with missiles or rockets.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry on April 3 announced it had shot down a Russian plane, the scene images showed that it appeared to be a Su-35S fighter and the pilot was captured. The Russian military has not commented on this information.
