Vaccines for children from 5 years old return to Vietnam on May 10
The first batch of Covid-19 vaccines, administered to children from 5 to under 12 years old, is expected to return to Vietnam in May if the procedures are completed, according to the Deputy Health Minister.
At the government’s regular press conference on the afternoon of April 4, Deputy Health Minister Do Xuan Tuyen said that this batch of vaccines is among the vaccines that Australia has given to Vietnam. Yesterday afternoon, the Ministry of Health worked with the Embassy of this country and the General Director of Pfizer in Vietnam. Both units agreed to bring the vaccine batch to Vietnam as quickly as possible.
According to Mr. Tuyen, Vietnam has basically covered two doses for the population from 12 years old. In December 2021, the Ministry of Health proposed and then the Government allowed to apply the form of contractor selection in special cases to buy 21.9 million doses of Pfizer vaccine for children from 5 to under 12 years old.
However, during negotiations with Pfizer, a number of organizations such as the Australian, Dutch and US embassies in Vietnam offered to support vaccines for children. Therefore, the Ministry of Health is making adjustments to submit to the Government, ensuring that the purchase rate and the rate of aid receipt meet vaccination needs.
“The Ministry of Health has organized communication and training on vaccination plans for children from 5 years old, so that localities can vaccinate as soon as vaccines are available,” said the Deputy Health Minister.

Previously, on March 10, the Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Health to clarify responsibilities, review and handle organizations and individuals for delay in purchasing vaccines for children aged 5 to 12. After that, the Ministry of Health asked the Prime Minister’s permission to receive 4.7 million doses of Pfizer vaccine and 9 million doses of Moderna vaccine, because Australia can provide aid to Vietnam.
About domestic vaccine productionMr. Tuyen said there are three candidates, including Nano Covax, Covivac, ARCT-154. All three are in clinical trials.
Nano Covax has phase 3 testing and midterm evaluation of this phase. The vaccine has been held by the Ethics and Licensing Councils of the Ministry of Health for opinions. “However, this candidate still lacks some data. Nanogen company is gathering and supplementing”, Mr. Tuyen said and affirmed, when the dossier is completed, the councils will continue to meet and evaluate; if eligible, will issue circulation permit.
Covivac has tested and evaluated phase one midterm, is testing phase two; finalize the protocol and documents to conduct the third phase of the trial.
The ARCT-154 vaccine uses advanced mRNA technology, has been evaluated mid-term in phase one, and is being implemented in phases 3a and 3b.
“If the conditions are met, the Ministry of Health will license these vaccines. The vaccine is for human injection, so it is necessary to evaluate the safety very high, to avoid immediate complications or long-term complications.” Mr. Tuyen emphasized.
