Billionaire Chin Jit Pyng only likes to drive cheap cars to work

Giant Chin Jit Pyng owns the largest car collection in Malaysia, including 3 rare Bugatti supercars and many expensive classic cars, but every day he still drives a cheap Proton domestic car.

Chin Jit Pyng (also known as JP) is a famous giant in Malaysia for having a collection of more than 100 cars, of which, 1/10 are already super expensive hypercars. Most recently, Mr. Chin has overwhelmed car enthusiasts when he owns Bugatti Divo. Bugatti only produces 40 Divos worldwide, starting at $5.9 million, excluding personalization details and taxes.

Chin’s passion for cars started with his father. According to the Malaysian giant, his father was never able to buy a new car, instead choosing used models.

Mr. Chin later found success in business when he founded Silverlake Innovation Partners in 1996, an IT company for major banks across Malaysia. Since then, Chin’s car collection has steadily increased, and has surpassed the threshold of 100 cars.

His first Bugatti was Chiron worth $2.6 million, ordered in 2016 after a test drive with my son. Next up is a Divo only in Southeast Asia and the current jewel in the collection. But not stopping, it is expected that in 2024, Mr. Chin will buy a Bugatti Bolide just for the race and it will surpass the Divo in terms of both expensiveness and rarity.

In addition to two rare Bugattis, the Malaysian giant has about 30 to 40 other “unique” cars on display at his personal JPM Museum in his hometown of Kuala Lumpur. Of these, 15 are in the museum and have appeared in television series and movies, including James Bond, The Godfather and Magnum PI.

Present, supercar The Bugatti Divo is on display at the Bugatti showroom in Singapore, but Mr Chin plans to move it to Malaysia soon. However, he likely won’t be driving on the street because Chin prefers to commute to work in a Malaysian-made Proton X50 or X70 to avoid attention.

Mr. Chin’s passion for cars is also extremely principled. When the producers of “Crazy Rich Asians” planned to shoot in Singapore and Malaysia, they contacted Chin to rent a few cars from the collection. The giant agreed but forced the filmmakers to only shoot two Ferrari F430 and Ford GT 40 in the indoor scene, instead of running on the street.

Chin’s principle is that all cars in the collection are preserved intact, they are investments that will only increase in value over time.
