Do not dare to drink water for fear of urinating a lot, how many times a day is enough?

Most adults will urinate 5-7 times in 24 hours but if it’s more than 8 times a day or frequent urination at night, it could be a cause for concern…

Ths. Lien Huong, Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, said that the number of times each person urinates a day is different, but according to statistics, most adults will urinate 5-7 times within 24 hours.

These urinations will occur during the day. If you find that you often have to urinate, there is no need to worry, but, this problem should not be taken lightly.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nam (Cau Giay, Hanoi) said he did not dare to drink water. The day he only dared to drink half a bowl of soup, then a sip of tea to rinse his mouth. If you count the whole day, it is estimated that he only drinks about 1/2 liter of water.

“Drinking a little water is like that, but after just over an hour, I felt the urge to urinate again. There was a time when I couldn’t run in time, even my pants. This situation makes me very afraid to go anywhere. All day, I just hang around the house next to the toilet, “said Mr. Nam.

Also in the same situation as Mr. Nam, her daughter Mai Anh (7 years old) also had to urinate continuously. “Every time I have the feeling that after I drink it, I immediately dispose of it without keeping it in my body. The day is just more than the hour of the child peeing, and the night is 1-2 times, even bedwetting at night. In addition to her child’s polyuria, she still eats and studies normally, so I don’t know if she needs to go to the doctor or not?”, asked Mai Anh.

According to Ths. Dr. Lien Huong is not always a matter of concern. But if you’re urinating more than 8 times a day or urinating a lot at night, it could be a concern.

Frequent urination can be as simple as drinking too much coffee or alcohol, or more serious causes like UTIs, diabetes and cancer (very rare).

Specifically, frequent urination can be caused by drinking too much water which can lead to frequent urination. Caffeinated and alcoholic beverages will even increase your need to urinate as they are diuretics.

Citric acid found in citrus fruits and drinks, even spicy foods or vitamin C can also be the culprit causing you to urinate frequently.

“In these cases, the simplest solution is to cut down on the consumption of these foods/drinks,” said Ms. Lien Huong.

Another cause of frequent urination is a urinary tract infection. This inflammation can affect both men and women, but affects them in different ways.

“Women are more susceptible to UTIs than men, especially before menopause. Whenever you notice a sudden change in your frequency of urination, you need to rule out a urinary tract infection.

About 85% of urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria and can be treated with antibiotics,” said Ms. Lien Huong.

Experts also point out that another cause of frequent urination is interstitial cystitis. This is a chronic condition that more commonly affects women between the ages of 20 and 40.

Interstitial cystitis is often mistaken for a urinary tract infection, but in interstitial cystitis, there is no bacterial growth.

Interstitial cystitis is thought to originate from the lining of the bladder sensing that the bladder is full, combined with pain that makes you need to urinate.

People with interstitial cystitis also often have other medical conditions such as endometriosis, cystic fibrosis, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and depression.

Notably, in the early stages of pregnancy, women also urinate more. This is due to increased levels of the hormone HCG.

In the later stages of pregnancy, the growing fetus increases pressure on the bladder, thus causing the feeling of needing to urinate to empty the bladder frequently.

Unless you’re urinating a lot and have a burning sensation when urinating (a sign of a urinary tract infection), there’s nothing to worry about.

In men, the prostate gland is the gland that produces semen, located just below the bladder and surrounding the urethra. The prostate gland usually grows larger as you age, which is completely normal.

However, due to its special position, the prostate gland may press on the urethra, blocking the flow of urine. As a result, men cannot urinate completely, making them need to urinate more often, especially at night.

Still according to Ms. Lien Huong, sometimes frequent urination is also a sign (although very rare) of cancer.

Frequent urination can be a symptom of bladder cancer but is often accompanied by specific symptoms, such as blood in the urine.

“So, if you urinate frequently with the following symptoms: blood in your urine, weakness in your legs (a sign of spinal cord problems), fever or back pain (a sign of kidney inflammation), or fluid If you have abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis, you should see a doctor”, emphasized Ms. Lien Huong.
