How many shares does founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey own?

One of the hottest news in the technology world today is that Elon Musk – CEO of Tesla became the largest shareholder of Twitter. According to a profile published on April 4, the world’s richest billionaire currently holds 9.2% of shares of this social network.

Unlike many other big technology companies like Google, Facebook or Amazon, the founders of Twitter do not hold a controlling stake in the company. According to Forbes, co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey currently owns 2.25% of Twitter. The fortune of the 45-year-old billionaire is Forbes estimated at $8.6 billion, of which the majority came from stakes in fintech company Square.

Jack Dorsey was born in 1976 in the US and started coding while studying at Bishop DuBourg High School in St. Louis. At the age of 15, he wrote dispatch software for taxi companies. When not hanging around electronics stores or playing soccer with friends, Dorsey often goes to rock concerts.

Like many tech billionaires, Dorsey didn’t graduate from college. He studied Science and Technology at the University of Missouri, then transferred to New York University before dropping out midway.

On March 21, 2006, Dorsey posted his first tweet and named his account simply “@jack.” He and co-founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone spent $7,000 to buy a domain name for Twitter. 30, Dorsey assumed the role of CEO of this company. In October 2008, he was “kicked” from the executive position.

During Jack Dorsey’s absence, Twitter went through a number of crises, with users dwindling and the company’s stock plunging. In 2015, Dorsey returned to the position of CEO of Twitter with a whole new mindset. In a document published in 2019, Dorsey only received a salary of $ 1.4 for the CEO position in 2018. Before that, he did not receive a dime.

In 2020, the hedge fund Elliott Management Corp – a shareholder of Twitter – repeatedly called for Dorsey to resign because he thought he was no longer fully committed to the company and focused too much on Square. Dorsey then eased the pressure by bringing in representatives from Elliott Management Corp and partner company Silver Lake Partners on the social networking board.

At the end of November last year, Dorsey left the CEO position, giving the position to Parag Agrawal – former CTO of Twitter.

“I decided to leave Twitter because I believed the company was ready to grow without the shadow of its founder. I trust Parag as the Twitter CEO. His work in the past 10 years has undergone many transformations. I cherish his skills, his heart and his soul. It’s time for him to lead,” Dorsey said.

The founder of Twitter is known to be very active in philanthropy. In April 2020, Dorsey pledged to transfer $ 1 billion from her stake in Square to contribute to the anti-Covid-19 fund, while supporting education and universal health care for girls. At the time, this amount accounted for 28% of his fortune. In an episode of the podcast “Yang Speaks” aired in May 2020, Dorsey also shared that he wanted to give away all of his assets.
