Olympic archer Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu did not attend the 31st SEA Games?

Recently, the Vietnamese archery team has closed the list to attend the 31st SEA Games with 16 athletes, including 8 men and 8 women. Among them, there are outstanding factors such as Anh Nguyet, Thanh Nhi, Nguyen Duy, Duc Anh,… However, the most surprising thing is when Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu is crossed out in this list.

The reason given is because Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu did not have good results in the national championship in 2021 and the qualifying round for the selection of athletes for the 31st SEA Games. These are two decisive tests to decide. Trained to prepare a tentative list of 16 players to attend the 31st SEA Games.

Phi Vu was born in 1999 in Hai Duong. He won gold in the men’s and women’s doubles at the 2019 Asian Archery Championships in the 70m one-string bow. After that, he won the gold medal at the 30th SEA Games. Phi Vu is one of two archery athletes in Vietnam to attend the Tokyo Olympics 2021 (the other is Anh Nguyet).

However, Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu’s performance recently has plummeted. At the 2022 National Excellent Archery Championships, Phi Vu only won 1 bronze medal in the 50m distance. When it came to the selection of the Vietnamese archery team towards the Southeast Asian Games, he did not have good results when he only finished in 5th place.

The fact that an archer who attended the Tokyo Olympics was not on the list to attend the SEA Games made many people regret. At the 2020 Olympics, Phi Vu stopped in the third round of the individual content.

According to the leader in charge of archery, the list of 16 athletes attending the SEA Games can be changed before the competition time. Therefore, Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu can still hope to get a ticket to the Games, but improving his performance and mentality in a short time is also a big challenge.
