Zajonc “selectively stalked seven women of Asian descent to attack each of them, some of whom were beaten from behind. There was no motive other than racism,” Bragg said.

He said the suspect hit the victim’s face with his hand and elbow before fleeing. One person was also pushed down by the suspect. The victims all suffered facial injuries, one person was hospitalized due to a traumatic brain injury.

New York police identified Zajonc through security camera video and testimony from staff at the New York Public Library, outside the site of an attack.

The suspect was arrested on March 2. Bragg said his office is investigating 27 hate crimes against Asians.

Racially motivated attacks against people of Asian descent have increased in the US since 2020, the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the wake of increased crime in New York since 2020, officials say many of the attackers suffered from mental disorders. In January, an Asian woman died after being pushed down the subway tracks by a psychopath.
