Selling cars like ‘beer with peanuts’, two car dealers were fined half a million USD

AmericaTwo Nissan dealers in Arizona force customers to pay more for equipment before they can sell their cars.

Dealers ABC Nissan and Pinnacle Nissan were forced to pay a total of $480,000 in fines and compensation for false advertising and forcing customers to buy more equipment.

According to the Arizona Attorney General’s office, two dealers advertise cars at attractive prices and then force customers to spend more money for equipment or features that drive up the price of the car. Additional items that the customer must purchase include injecting nitrogen into the tires, coating the car’s paint, covering the doors, or applying frosted glass.

These can be options where the car buyer usually has the discretion to accept or decline. However, in the two dealers above, if customers do not spend more money, they will be refused to buy a car.

A Pinnacle Nissan dealer even tells customers that some accessories are pre-assembled and cannot be removed, so customers can only choose to buy the car or not.

Pinnacle Nissan dealers must compensate customers $ 305,000 and $ 50,000 fines. ABC Nissan also had to pay $100,000 to customers and 25,000 fines, and 25,000 attorneys’ fees.

In addition, the ruling also requires these dealers to advertise the correct car prices, as well as to remove the names of customers – who have requested not to receive calls to advertise car sales – from the dealer’s list.
