The current storage place is extremely thrilling

Empress Dowager Cixi (1835 – 1908) was a power holder “covering the sky with one hand” at the end of the Qing Dynasty. Famous for his lavish and extravagant lifestyle, anecdotes about Cixi are numerous. Even in her death, it is not surprising that the queen mother organized her funeral as grandiose as the emperor. The resting place of Tu Hi – Dinh Dong mausoleum in Thanh Dong mausoleum is considered to be bigger than the tombs of the Emperors.

With the feudal lords, they will always be buried with a lot of gold and silver treasures when they are buried to both show their authority and believe that they can bring their wealth down to the “golden stream”. In memoirs Signed by Ai Nguyet Hien Ly Lien Anh – a trusted eunuch of Empress Dowager Cixi wrote that when she died, she ordered her to be buried with an unimaginable amount of treasure.

Among the treasures, the most prominent and most valuable is the nightingale pearl, loved by Cixi during her lifetime. It is a giant jewel, placed right in the mouth of the Queen Mother, and the value is stunning. In addition, because of rumors that jade could resist decomposition, Cixi ordered the servant to put this in his mouth when he died.

According to the book The theft of Tu Xi’s tomb by historian Tuong Bac Luc, the nightingale was about 700 carats, weighed about 133.4 grams, and was worth 10.8 million taels of silver at that time. In cash, it was worth about 10 million yuan at the end of the Qing Dynasty. When comparing prices with modern times, it is now almost impossible to estimate. There are experts, the valuation is now about 800 million yuan, or nearly 3,000 billion.

According to some documents, it is possible that this giant night pearl came from the Mughal Empire (in present-day India). In 1760, the treasure was given to the Qianlong Emperor by foreign emissaries and passed down in the Qing dynasty.

But Cixi’s wish that the beloved jewel would accompany her down the golden stream was never fulfilled. Because of the abundance of treasures, her tomb has of course become a “favorite” target for grave robbers.

In 1928, Sun Dien Anh carried out a famous grave robbery, destroying the tomb of Tu Hi to plunder the property. There is a record that the thief himself described the pearl as follows: “It is divided into two pieces, when closed it is a very beautiful ball, glowing green, in the dark, standing a distance away, each hair can still be clearly seen.”

For the purpose of stealing graves to get rich, Ton Dien Anh and his juniors sold the nightingale. The treasure passed through the hands of many rich and famous owners once belonged to Tong My Linh, wife of Chiang Kai-shek. Tong My Linh loves and uses this night pearl often, even attaching it to shoes as jewelry.

A gem simulation build

Over the past decades, there have been many rumors and speculations about the fate of the treasure. One of them said that it belonged to John D. Rockefeller – a billionaire in the faraway US on the other side of the hemisphere. He was a notorious oil tycoon and was named the richest man on the planet at the beginning of the 20th century. At one time, Rockefeller’s fortune accounted for nearly 2% of the value of the US economy. The nightingale may still be in the Rockefeller family collection today, but has not been made public.

Another rumor is that the jewel after the reign of Tong My Linh is still in Taiwan (China). However, the owner who holds it is a mystery. The posterity may never be able to admire the true image of this priceless sparkling night pearl.
