Currently, adolescent health problems are a concern of many parents, both physical and mental problems. According to experts, this is a very sensitive age, without the guidance and early intervention of abnormal symptoms will be very dangerous. In fact, there have been many unfortunate incidents lately.

Phan Chi Thanh, a doctor at Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, said that adolescent psychophysiological problems are very diverse, sometimes stemming from developmental disorders, which can make children, as well as adults, unable to think.

Doctor Thanh took a specific example from the case of a 6th grader, studying at a very famous school in Hanoi, who had to be hospitalized in an emergency due to intestinal obstruction, missed her period due to body changes.

Therefore, this female student, named H, is the class president and studies very well, and is highly trusted and proud of by her teachers. However, a surprise occurred when H entered the 6th grade, where his body developed rapidly compared to his friends. This made the student feel anxious and afraid because her body was completely different from her classmates.

Along with his extraordinary body development, H also experienced unexpected family events, namely a conflict in the relationship between his parents before, then separated and H lived with his mother. Due to busy work, my mother was not able to follow up and provide psychological encouragement to me.

“When he saw many changes in his body, H did not eat or drink, so his weight dropped from 48 to 33 kg and he was severely constipated (defecate once a week). The child has severe nutritional disorders and chronic constipation that causes intestinal obstruction and must be taken to the emergency room.

At Viet Duc Hospital, H was diagnosed with constipation, an intestinal obstruction leading to dilation and loss of function of a segment of the colon. Doctors were forced to perform surgery to remove the part of the intestine that had lost its function and then reattach it. In addition, doctors need to carry out comprehensive psychological and physical nutritional care for children. During my consultation with the multidisciplinary team, I had one more problem which was that since I lost weight, I completely stopped menstruating, causing a delay in the pubertal development process. Therefore, I was invited to consult, as well as provide treatment directions to help patients,” said Doctor Thanh.

When approached, H told Doctor Thanh that she had been menstruating since the age of 10, but then because her large body was completely different from her classmates, she felt strange and very scared. . I always fasted, or vomited after eating so that my body became small like my classmates. I was always obsessed with the thought that I was too tall and fat. Even when I have lost a lot of weight, but standing in front of the mirror, I always imagine that I am still overweight and should continue to lose more.

Another very important problem is that children do not have adults to accompany and share so that they can visualize and imagine what will happen when they enter puberty. So as my body changes from day to day, I feel very scared and insecure. When visiting a doctor, they suggest consulting a psychologist to support your child in dealing with depression.

According to Doctor Thanh, the fact that cases like H are not uncommon, every year doctors face about 3-4 hospitalization cases under the same condition. “Eating disorders in adolescents have two problems, one of which is that overeating causes weight gain and obesity. Second, fasting makes the body tired, there are even cases of hospitalization in a state of resuscitation, anemia, and poor nutrition.

More importantly, eating disorders do not stop at nutritional problems but also have long-term and serious consequences, both physical and mental, for children later in life. Research has shown that eating disorders increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, the risk of requiring intensive care, the risk of dying from exhaustion, and especially suicidal thoughts are quite frequent in the minds of patients. So this is a very serious and worrying problem. Especially in the context of the current online learning epidemic,” said Dr Thanh.

Doctor Thanh says that eating disorders make children think about suicide in 30-40%.

According to doctors, to overcome this problem, the role of parents in “going forward, leading”, educating or sharing with their children when they reach puberty about the changes in themselves is very important. This is to help children not to be shocked, shocked and psychologically depressed and lead to actions that can have unfavorable consequences.
