Around 4am, a fire broke out from an apartment in To Ky Tower, Trung My Tay ward. The man and woman living inside ran out before the fire engulfed them. Many residents discovered the fire, shouting at each other, banging on the door of a neighbor’s house to evacuate.
Ms. Ngo Thi Hong Van (a resident of the building) said that when exercising below, she saw the fire burning, so she ran inside and hit the fire alarm box installed on the wall, but it did not work. The security guard of Tan Chanh Hiep market opposite the apartment building broadcast a loudspeaker to those still on the building.
Three fire engines and dozens of soldiers arrived at the scene. Firefighters raised ladders and used water cannons to put out the fire. There were no casualties in the fire, but many buildings and properties in the apartment were destroyed. Black smoke filled the apartments above.
According to a leader of the People’s Committee of Trung My Tay Ward, the fire was caused by a man and a woman in the apartment that were set on fire after arguing. The police worked with them to investigate.
To Ky Tower apartment building has been put into use since October 2018, with two blocks of more than 400 apartments, with about 1,000 residents.
