Catching fish on a rough day

Quang NamMr. Vu Long, 67 years old, dropped a net 60 m long and 1 meter wide into the sea, an hour later pulled up to collect fish to improve family meals.

After an unusual flood at the end of March and the beginning of April, Quang Nam is dry, the sea is rough, the waves are 2-4 m high. Mr. Long cannot row a boat to catch fish and crabs as usual, so he chooses to cast his net near the shore. Bringing the net to the beach in Tam Thanh commune, Tam Ky city, he tied a rope with a length of more than 300m to one end of the net, crossed each wave, and gradually dropped it into the sea.

Each wave hit the shore, pulling the net away, but still in the control of the old fisherman through the rope. The net moves constantly, so Mr. Long is always on his hands and feet. When the waves brought the net out, he dropped the rope, when the waves reached the shore, he rolled them up. “The pulling process must be based on the position, the waves come out and stay, the waves come in quickly to collect the rope because the net is very heavy under the water,” the old fisherman shared his experience.

After about 30 minutes of struggling with the waves, Mr. Long was able to bring the net to shore. Placed on the sand, he in turn removed the fish from the net, collected more than a kilogram of rays, ken, turtles, birds… The fresh fish was enough to feed his family on rough seas. If sold, Mr. Long can earn more than 100,000 VND.

The main season of fishing near the shore is from the end of August to December of the lunar calendar, but this year in March, the weather is unusual, the sea is rough, many fish species come ashore to hunt. The coast of Tam Thanh commune is nearly 10 km long and is a fishing place for many fishermen. Each person stood a few hundred meters away from each other and let go of their nets. The investment capital is not much, the net is bought and processed for one million dong and 300,000 dong for rope.

Also catching on the coast of Tam Thanh commune, Mr. Le Thang Long (29 years old, Tam Thanh commune) said that on a calm day, he followed boats to the sea to catch crabs and crabs. Today the sea was rough, he waded to his stomach to let go of his net to find fish.

Accustomed to the cold of the waves and sea breeze, he skillfully adjusted the rope, not to let it be too loose due to the waves pushing in, nor too tight by the force of the water pulling it out. At that time, the new fish caught in the net that was submerged in the water.

After two hours of struggling with sea water, when the net was about 30 meters from the shore, Mr. Long began to withdraw. Dropping the coil into the sand, he was immersed in the sea again, gathering the net ashore to remove more than a kilogram of fish.

Casting nets along the coast in rough seas requires experienced fishermen. The water flows strongly, the more you move the net, the more fish you can catch. “But this job is also lucky. Some days, there are fishes caught in a thick net, some days there are only a few that don’t have enough meals,” said Mr. Long.
