DNA makes the killer “grave for guilt” 35 years after the shocking sentence

According to ABC Newspolice have named a man who died in January 2013 as the perpetrator of four attacks on women in 1987 and 1990, of which three were murdered.

The killer, nicknamed “I-65” or “Days Inn”, created a tragic case and almost completely disappeared over the decades.

The case began on February 21, 1987, with Vicki Heath, 41, murdered while working the night shift at the Super 8 motel in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Later, Indiana State police identified two more murders that occurred on the same day, the victims were Margaret Gill (24, working the night shift at the Days Inn hotel in Merillville Indiana) and Jean Gilbert (working the night shift at the hotel). On January 2, 1990, an employee at the Days Inn hotel in the Columbus branch, Indiana, was attacked in a similar way to the previous three victims, but survived despite being fatally stabbed. She then provided authorities with the suspect’s perfect appearance and details of the crime.

The main factor linking the four cases was their proximity to Interstate 65. Various forensic evidence was collected including DNA, clothing, hair, fibers, etc., which also linked the cases together. But despite everything, the suspect remains a mystery.

Decades after the murder, the Indiana State Police and the FBI used genetic genealogy to investigate the killer again. This time, the DNA pointed directly at Harry Edward Greenwell, born on December 9, 1944, died in 2013, went in and out of prison many times.

Police reports, press documents, and some of the suspect’s reports relating to other offenses, fit perfectly to create a seamless timeline for the tumultuous murders.

Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter spoke with family members of the victims, saying he hopes the outcome can provide some comfort as they learn the perpetrator is no longer on Earth.

Mr. Carter described it as a decades-long investigation, a relentless pursuit, persistent and ultimately resolved by technological advancement in criminal science.
