Drivers in the UK test driving multiple cars at the same time remotely
An employee of technology company Streetdrone in Oxford is driving the car on a London street, more than 80km from his office. But with just a simple operation, he can switch his system to control another car also in the city of Oxford.
Mike Potts, co-founder of UK-based technology company Streetdrone, said: “We’ve used two cars, one in Oxford and one in London. We run both simultaneously in remote or automatic mode and we switch between the two by using one operator and a single workstation located in our office”.
The developer uses a high-speed 5G network with low latency to control the cars in real time. The test is still in the early stages, so the driver is in the car to intervene in situations that could be dangerous to road users.
“Technology will help optimize vehicle usage, especially when multiple vehicles are only used 20% of the time. I think in many cases one person can be in charge of up to five different vehicles. A large fleet of vehicles but with very few operators. Really efficient. That’s the idea we’re after.” – Mr. Mike Potts shared.
Developers expect, by 2023, technology remote control car can be practically applied to the logistics chain, helping to save personnel in the transportation industry in the future and optimize the performance of delivery vehicles. Then their goal is to show off a driverless passenger car system.
