Fragments of Chinese rockets ‘freely fall’ to Earth? Which country suffers?

Forbes According to information, part of a rocket believed to be Chinese launched in 2021 has fallen back to Earth, on a village in the Indian state of Maharashtra on Saturday, April 2. Thankfully, there have been no reports of serious damage or injury from this case in India.

At least one metal circle and large unburnt metal ball fell in the state of Maharashtra. The metal circle, 2-3 meters in diameter and weighing about 40 kilograms, was discovered in a village field in the state of Maharashtra. Another object – a large metal ball about half a meter in diameter – also landed in another village in the same western Indian state of Maharashtra.

Experts believe that a large piece of space debris (pictured) that fell in rural India over the weekend could be the remains of a Chinese rocket Long March 3B launched in 2021. Photo:

An official from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) told Times of India that the timing of the objects’ appearance was “the closest match” to the April 2 re-entry of debris from a Chinese rocket launched in 2021.

Space observer Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said the metal circle matched a fragment of China’s Long March 3B rocket.

This fragment is part of the third stage of the Long March 3B rocket – a rocket launched on February 4, 2021 from China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Center, to carry out the TJS geostationary satellite launch mission- 6 into orbit. After orbiting, the rest of the rocket flies around the Earth like space junk.

However, after 1 year in orbit, it begins to lose altitude and energy with each orbit around our planet. The result is falling to Earth.

The American Aerospace Corporation estimates that the Long March 3B rocket re-entered the atmosphere around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2 local time. The video shows glowing debris streaking across the sky over the Indian state of Maharashtra.

That sight was initially mistaken for a meteorite, but the remnants of the rocket that hit the ground were later recovered.

Usually, spent rockets either stay in space forever (becoming space junk) or are oriented to crash into the uninhabited waters of the South Pacific Ocean (called Points). Nemo, this area is 34 times the size of France).

However, in the case of uncontrolled rocket debris/remains like this one, there is little way to predict where they will land on Earth.

Fortunately, even rocket remnants like stages tend to be burned up most of the time by the extreme heat and friction caused by atmospheric re-entry. To date, there have been no known deaths or serious injuries from such an incident.

China is often criticized for keeping its space activities secret and often refuses to answer questions about such uncontrolled falling objects. In previous years, the country’s rocket parts also fell uncontrollably, making the international community a bit worried.

There are no laws that regulate re-entry into the atmosphere or prevent one country from allowing a bit of space debris to land on another country’s soil. However, damage from space debris forces the host country to be financially responsible, as provided in the 1972 Convention on Liability in Space. That’s why Canada once demanded that the Soviet Union $6 million in compensation in 1978, after radioactive debris from Soviet satellites scattered over Canada.

The Long March missile series is China’s most powerful missile, of which the Long March 3B is the country’s second most powerful missile.
