Giraffes fight hyenas to protect their young

Tour guide Alexandra Olivieri captured this heartbreaking moment in Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa.

“I was working at the reserve when I noticed a flock of vultures coming down from the sky. We decided to see what they were attracted to. We didn’t expect to see a female giraffe fighting fiercely. to the herd of hyenas to protect the cubs,” Olivieri said.

Olivieri shares this is one of the most memorable moments of her 10 years as a guide.

“It was a bit of a shock because we didn’t expect to see such a sight. What we remember most is the growl and stomping of the female giraffe to chase the lions.”she said.

However, the next morning, when Olivieri and his colleagues returned to the site, they discovered the hyenas were eating their prey and there was no sign of the female giraffe.

It seems the giraffe has failed in its attempt to protect its young. Not long after, a male lion appeared, took the giraffe’s cub away and slaughtered it.

According to Olivieri, despite observing the whole process, she and her colleagues do not intend to interfere in any of the developments because that is the harsh nature of the wildlife world.
